In Our Own Words: Survivor Perspectives for Those Gathering and Using Information about Systematic and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence

The quotes on this microsite are extracted from the full-length version of this resource, which you are encouraged to read in its entirety. It currently is available in Arabic, Bosnian, English, French, Nepali, Spanish, Swahili and Ukrainian. In addition to sharing a larger selection of quotes from survivors, the full-length version also contains important background information and the methodology for how the resource was developed.

The Global Code of Conduct for Gathering and Using Information about Systematic and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (the "Murad Code")

The Murad Code sets out the core, minimum standards information-gatherers and users must uphold in order to ensure their work is safe, ethical and effective - and to avoid causing the types of harm survivors describe in this resource. The Murad Code is currently available in 16 languages.

For the full selection of resources providing guidance on how to operationalise the minimum standards captured in the Murad Code, visit the project website.

Acknowledgments

The conception and development of this resource was an intensive process. The Institute for International Criminal Investigations (IICI), which is spearheading the global Murad Code project and led the development of this resource, is very grateful to everyone who has helped to infuse the process with so much purpose and meaning:

  • All the survivors, including survivors who have not been quoted, who have withdrawn from the process, and who unfortunately could not be recontacted for the final consultations;
  • Nadia Murad for her foreword;
  • the Lead Consultant on the resource;
  • the partner organisations - Medica Zenica, the Mukwege Foundation/SEMA, Nadia’s Initiative, Refugee Law Project, The Story Kitchen, HIMRIGHTS and Lawyers and Doctors for Human Rights – and their colleagues
  • numerous unnamed individuals, including translators, interpreters, psycho-social support persons, reviewers of draft versions of the resource, and the designer of the final resource; and
  • Murad Code project colleagues.

IICI also is thankful to the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative of the UK government (PSVI), who largely funded the initial phases of the development of this resource (until early 2022), and to the government of Canada, through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), who has funded the final phases of the resource’s development since 2023.
